What Is Image Upscaling?
Image upscaling makes a picture bigger by adding new pixels, so a 500×500 image becomes 1000×1000 or 2000×2000. AI upscaling predicts what those new pixels should look like, which keeps edges sharper. Plain resizing just stretches the pixels it already has, so an enlarged image looks soft or blocky.
How to Enlarge an Image Without Losing Quality
No upscaler can bring back detail a photo never had, but AI gets much closer than stretching. Pick the right factor, start from the cleanest copy you have, and know where the AI has to guess.
2× or 4×: Which Upscale Factor Should You Pick?
Pick 2× when the image is almost big enough, and 4× when it is small.
- 2× Upscale doubles the width and height, up to 2,000 pixels on the longest side. It is the default and the quicker choice.
- 4× Upscale makes the width and height four times bigger, up to 4,000 pixels. It suits icons, thumbnails and small photos.
- Each factor uses its own AI model of about 33 MB, so trying the other one for the first time means one more download.
Images over 1,000 pixels on the longest side are scaled down to 1,000 before upscaling. That keeps the work fast enough for phones. There is no 8× option.
How Do I Upscale an Image to 4K?
Use 4× Upscale on an image of at least 960×540 pixels, which becomes exactly 3840×2160 (4K). Wider images come out a little over 4K, up to 4,000 pixels wide, because anything over 1,000 pixels is scaled to 1,000 first. To land on an exact size, finish with the image resizer.
How Big Can I Print an Upscaled Image?
For a sharp print, aim for 300 pixels per inch. At that density, a 4,000-pixel result prints about 13 inches on its long side, and a 2,000-pixel result about 6.7 inches. Common sizes need:
- 4×6 inch photo: 1200×1800 pixels, so use 4× on an image of at least 300×450.
- 8×10 inch print: 2400×3000 pixels, so use 4× on an image of at least 600×750.
- A4 page: 2480×3508 pixels, so use 4× on an image of at least 620×877.
What Can AI Upscaling Not Fix?
The AI cleans up edges and smooths noise and JPEG blocks, but every new detail is a guess. Expect these limits:
- Small faces can come out smooth, waxy or slightly changed.
- Small or blurry text can warp into shapes that are not real letters.
- Heavy blur and motion blur stay blurry, since lost detail can't be found again.
- Scratches, tears and faded colors on old photos stay as they are.
- Pixel art loses its hard square edges.
