What Is Gaussian Blur?
Gaussian blur softens an image by mixing each pixel with the pixels around it. Close neighbors count more than far ones, so edges fade smoothly and fine detail disappears while colors and shapes stay. Pixelation is different: it swaps areas for flat square blocks, which looks deliberate rather than soft.

How Much Blur Should I Use?

Can I Blur Only the Background or Part of a Photo?
No. This tool blurs the whole image evenly, including the subject. To hide one area, such as a face or a name, cover it with a black box in the redact image tool. To place a photo on a blurred copy of itself, pick the Blur fill in the square image tool.
Can a Blurred Picture Be Unblurred?
Not back to the original, but a light blur can be partly undone. The saved JPG holds only the blurred pixels, with no hidden layer or copy of the original. Sharpening tools can still bring back large text or shapes from a weak blur. For passwords, account numbers or addresses, a solid black box is the safer choice.
Does Blurring Lower the Image Quality?
Blurring removes fine detail on purpose, but the width and height stay the same. The new file is always a JPG at 92% quality, which has a few side effects:
- Transparent areas in a PNG or WebP turn black, because JPG can't store transparency.
- An animated GIF becomes a still JPG of its first frame.
