Make a square image without cropping
Fit the whole photo in a square, with nothing cut off or stretched. Fill the empty sides with white, black, any color or a blur of the photo, or leave them transparent.

How to make an image square
- 1
Add your photo
Drop a photo in the box at the top of this page, click to choose one, or paste it. Add up to 30 photos to square them all at once. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and other common formats work.
- 2
Pick a fill
Choose White, Black, Color, Blur or Transparent for the empty sides. Add a margin if you want a border all the way around the photo.
- 3
Download the square
Check the live preview and the size in pixels, then download. One photo saves as a file like IMG_2041-square.jpg, and several photos come in one ZIP.
How to make a rectangular picture square without cropping
Add space to the short sides instead of cutting the long ones. The tool makes your photo's longest edge the side of the square, then centers the whole photo inside it.
A tall photo gets the fill on its left and right. A wide photo gets it above and below. Every part of the picture stays in the frame.
For example, a 1920 × 1280 px photo becomes a 1920 × 1920 px square. The photo keeps its size, with 320 px of fill above it and 320 px below.
That's how you resize an image to a square without cropping or zooming in. Panoramas, tall screenshots and scanned pages all fit, because the square grows around the photo.
Would you rather lose the edges than add a border? Crop your photo to a square instead.
Add a white border to make a photo square
White is the default fill, so your photo gets a white border on its short sides as soon as you add it. There are five fills to choose from:
- White: a clean border for shop photos, profile pictures and prints
- Black: black borders that suit dark photos, night shots and art
- Color: any color from the picker, or type a hex code like #1e90ff
- Blur: a blurred copy of your photo fills the empty sides
- Transparent: a square image without a background, saved as PNG or WebP
Add an even border on all four sides
The fill only covers the short sides until you add a margin. Set Margin from 0 to 20 % to put the same border on every side. At Full size, the margin doesn't shrink your photo, because the square grows to make room.
With a 10 % margin, a 1920 × 1280 px photo sits in a 2400 × 2400 px square. That's 240 px of border at the left and right, and 560 px above and below.
Use a blurred background instead of a border
Choose Blur, and a soft copy of the photo fills the square behind it. It picks up the photo's own colors, so the square looks full rather than framed.
The strength slider goes from 1 to 100 and starts at 50. The blur covers the whole square, with no dark or faded edges.
Keep a logo's transparent background
Choose Transparent to keep the see-through parts of a PNG logo or cut-out. Any other fill shows through those parts, so a logo on a clear background gets a white one. JPG can't store transparency, so picking JPG switches Transparent to White.
Square photos for posts and profile pictures
To post a whole photo on Instagram as a square, make it square here first. The app then has nothing to trim, so the full picture shows in the post.
Profile pictures work the same way. WhatsApp and most other apps show them in a square or round frame, which cuts off the sides of a full-length or group photo. Square it here, and the whole photo fits.
For a round frame, set the margin to 15 % or more. Then even the corners of your photo stay inside the circle.
For posts, the 1080 px size option gives a 1080 × 1080 px square. For a profile picture, Full size keeps the most detail.
Make an image square without stretching or losing quality
Your photo is never stretched or squashed. It keeps its exact shape, so faces, text and circles look the way they did. Only the space around the photo changes.
Keep Size on Full size, the default, for the sharpest result. The square's side matches your photo's long side, so every pixel is kept and nothing is enlarged.
Size has three options:
- Full size: a 4032 × 3024 px phone photo becomes a 4032 × 4032 px square
- 1080 px: a 1080 × 1080 px square, a common size for social posts
- Custom: any side from 16 to 10,000 px, such as 512 for a 512 × 512 px square
If 1080 or a custom size is bigger than your photo, the photo is enlarged to fill it, and the size readout says Enlarged. An enlarged photo can look soft.
Then pick the format:
- Auto saves a JPG, or a PNG when the square has see-through parts.
- JPG keeps photo files small. It's saved at quality 92 by default, and you can set it from 50 to 100.
- PNG is lossless, so no detail is lost, but photo files get large.
- WebP is often smaller than JPG at the same quality, and it can keep transparency.
A live readout under the preview shows the result's width and height in pixels. On iPhones and iPads, a very large square is scaled down to fit what the device can save, and the readout says so.
A free square image maker that keeps your photos private
This square image maker is free, with no sign-up and no watermark. It works as a square image converter for one photo or a whole batch. Your photos are made square on your phone or computer and never leave your device.
- Works online in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. There's no app to install.
- Opens JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, HEIC, HEIF and TIFF. Animated GIFs use the first frame.
- iPhone photos in HEIC open as they are, and phone photos come out the right way up.
- Square up to 30 photos at once, up to 50 MB each. They share the same settings and download together in one ZIP.
- Each file keeps your photo's name, like IMG_2041-square.jpg.
