For lossy sources (HEIC, WebP, AVIF), it's a second lossy pass. At quality 90 the re-encode is imperceptible. For lossless sources (PNG, TIFF, BMP), it's the first lossy pass and the JPG will be smaller but visually matched.
JPG has no alpha channel. Transparent pixels in the source compose against a white background during conversion. If transparency matters, use our PNG converter or WebP converter instead.
Yes where the source supports it: HEIC, WebP, AVIF, TIFF, and JPEG sources carry capture date, camera model, GPS, and exposure data into the JPG EXIF block. PNG sources have no EXIF so nothing transfers.
