What Does Split PDF Mean?
To split a PDF means to cut one PDF file into two or more smaller PDF files, each holding some of the original pages. Extracting pages is one kind of split: you keep only the pages you pick. Merging is the opposite task, because it joins several PDFs into one file.
How to Split a PDF Into Multiple Files
Each part becomes its own PDF, with its pages copied as they are. These answers cover picking pages, splitting in half, what carries over and file size.
How Do I Extract Specific Pages From a PDF?
Type the pages in the Page range input. Each part you separate with a comma becomes its own PDF, and pages you leave out aren't saved:
- 3-7 gives one PDF with pages 3 to 7.
- 1-3, 5, 8-10 gives three PDFs.
- To put pages that aren't next to each other in one PDF, remove the other pages with the trash icon first. Then type one range that covers the pages left, using the numbers shown under them.
How Do I Split a PDF in Half?
Click the scissors after the middle page, or type both halves as ranges, such as 1-5, 6-10 for a 10-page file. The tool splits between pages. It can't cut a single page down the middle.
What Carries Over to the Split Files?
The pages come through unchanged, but some extras that belong to the whole file do not:
- Kept: text you can select and search, fonts, images and page layout.
- Kept: web links on a page.
- Not kept: bookmarks, links that jump to another page, and the document title.
- Not kept: fillable form fields and digital signatures. Fill in forms before you split, and sign the parts after.
Will Splitting Make My PDF Smaller?
Each part has fewer pages, but it keeps its own copy of every font and image its pages use. So the parts together often add up to more than the original. There is no option to split by file size. To get a part under an email or upload limit, run it through the PDF compressor.

How do I split a PDF into individual pages?
Pick Every 1p under Split every N pages. Each page becomes its own PDF, and they all come in one ZIP. A 20-page file gives you 20 PDFs.
Can I split only part of a PDF?
Yes. Type a range in the Page range input, such as 3-7, to get one PDF with just those pages. Pages outside your ranges are left out of the download, and your original PDF stays as it was.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not while it's locked. A PDF that needs a password to open won't load, and one that blocks editing can't be split. If you know the password, remove it first with Unlock PDF, then split the unlocked copy.
How are the split files saved?
You get one ZIP file, even when there is only one part. Inside, each part is a PDF named by its number and pages, such as split_part1_1-3.pdf. The names don't include your original file name, so rename the parts after you unzip them if you need to.
Does splitting a PDF reduce its quality?
No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays sharp and images aren't compressed again. Each page looks the same as it did in the original file.
Can I split a PDF into equal parts?
Yes. Under Split every N pages, pick Every 1p, Every 2p, Every 3p, Every 5p or Every 10p. The last part holds what's left, so a 25-page file split every 10 pages gives parts of 10, 10 and 5 pages. For other sizes, type the ranges yourself.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no set limit on file size or page count. The real limit is your device's memory. Every page shows as a small preview, so a PDF with hundreds of pages can take a while to load.
Can I reorder or remove pages before splitting?
You can remove pages: hover over a page and click the trash icon, and the pages after it move up a number. Pages can't be dragged into a new order here. To reorder first, open your one file in the Merge PDF tool, drag the pages, download it, then split that file.
