How to crop a PDF

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Drop a PDF in the box at the top of this page, or click to choose one. Files up to 100 MB and 500 pages work, and every page shows as a thumbnail.

  2. 2

    Set the crop

In the Drag tab, pull the edges of the box in on the page preview. Or use Margins, Trim white margins or Page size. Choose All pages to crop the whole PDF, or This page to crop just one.

  3. 3

    Download the cropped PDF

The tool shows each page's new size, so you can check it before you download. The file is saved with your PDF's name, like report-cropped.pdf.

How to remove white margins from a PDF

Choose Trim white margins, then Trim all pages, and each page is cropped close to its text and images. The white border and the extra white space around the content are gone.

You can shape the trim in two ways:

  • Padding keeps a little white space around the content, from 0 to 20 mm. It starts at 2 mm, so nothing touches the page edge.
  • Trim each page on its own, so every page loses as much white space as it can.
  • Or use one trim for all pages. Each side keeps the smallest margin found on any page, so pages of the same size stay the same size.

Want to trim the margins of a PDF by hand? Drag the edges of the box in to the content, or type how much to cut off each side in the Margins tab.

Scans can have shadows, specks or grey paper near the edge, and those count as content. If the trim stops short on a scanned page, drag that page's box in yourself.

How to crop a PDF to a smaller page size

Pick a size in the Page size tab, then drag the frame over the part of the page you want to keep. The frame has that exact size, so the cropped page does too.

These sizes are ready to use:

  • A4: 210 × 297 mm
  • A5: 148 × 210 mm
  • Letter: 8.5 × 11 in
  • Custom: any width and height in mm or inches

Place the frame once for all pages, or move it on one page at a time. A page that's already smaller than the frame is left as it is, and its thumbnail tells you so.

Crop by exact margins in mm, inches or %

To cut a set amount off each side, use the Margins tab. Type the top, right, bottom and left margins in mm, inches or percent of the page.

Percent suits PDFs with pages of different sizes, because each page loses the same share of its width and height. Each page's size after the crop is shown as you go, such as 125 × 162 mm.

Crop all pages at once or one page at a time

Choose All pages to crop every page with the same settings, or This page to crop only the page you're on. All pages is the default.

To crop a PDF page by page, pick a page from the thumbnails, choose This page and set its crop. That page gets its own crop, and the other pages don't change.

Every page shows as a thumbnail with its own crop frame, so you can check each one before you download. Undo, redo and Reset let you try a crop and step back.

Pages of different sizes and rotated pages

One crop fits every page, even in a PDF that mixes A4 and Letter pages, portrait and landscape pages, or rotated pages. Margins are measured from each page's own edges, the way you see it on screen.

So a landscape or rotated page is cropped where you'd expect, not shifted or cut short.

Remove white margins before you print a PDF

Crop the white margins off first, then print. With less empty space on the page, the content can print larger and fill more of the sheet.

To print a cropped PDF:

  • Trim the white margins, or crop the page to the part you need.
  • Download the cropped PDF and open it.
  • In the print window, pick the option that fits the page to the paper.

Your printer still leaves its own thin blank edge around the sheet. Cropping removes the white space inside the PDF, not that printer margin.

Printing on A4 or Letter paper? Crop to that size in the Page size tab, and each cropped page matches the sheet.

Crop a PDF for free, with no sign-up or watermark

This PDF crop tool is free to use online, with no account and no download limit. Your PDF is cropped on your phone or computer, and it never leaves your device.

  • Nothing to install and no paid PDF software. It works in the browser on Windows, Mac, iPhone and Android.
  • No watermark on your pages, and no wait between files.
  • One PDF at a time, up to 100 MB and 500 pages.
  • The text stays text, images keep their quality, and details like the title and author are kept.
  • The cropped file keeps your PDF's name, like contract-cropped.pdf.
  • Password-protected PDFs aren't supported. Remove the password first, then crop the file.

What happens to the part you crop off?

It's hidden, not deleted. Cropping changes the visible area of each page, so the outside part no longer shows or prints. It's still inside the file, and a PDF editor can bring it back.

To get rid of it, turn on Remove the hidden part for good before you download. Each page is redrawn as an image of just the cropped area, so nothing outside the crop is left on the page.

This option is off by default. With it on, the text can't be selected or searched, and the file may get bigger. It works on PDFs of up to 50 pages. Links, bookmarks, form fields and comments don't carry over either.
