What Is an Open Graph Image?

Open Graph (OG) is a protocol created by Facebook that controls how URLs appear when shared on social media. The og:image meta tag defines the image shown in the link preview card. Twitter uses og:image as the fallback for twitter:image when no Twitter Card is specified. LinkedIn, Slack, and Discord also read og:image to render unfurl previews. The standard size is 1200×630 pixels (1.91:1 aspect ratio), which produces a full-width card on most platforms. Missing or incorrectly sized OG images result in cropped, blurry, or missing thumbnails — reducing click-through rates significantly.

OG Image Size Requirements by Platform

Twitter requires 1200×628 to 1200×630 for summary_card_with_large_image. LinkedIn recommends 1200×627 for article posts. Facebook supports 1200×630 for most link shares; images below 600×315 are shown as small inline thumbnails. Slack and Discord both support 1200×630 and will center-crop images with other aspect ratios.
