What is EXIF?

EXIFEXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata embedded in JPEG, TIFF, and HEIC image files by digital cameras and smartphones. It records technical capture data including camera model, shutter speed, aperture, ISO, GPS coordinates, and timestamp.

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is a standard for embedding metadata in image files, defined by JEITA (Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association) in 1995 and widely adopted by camera manufacturers. EXIF data is stored in a binary header segment within JPEG, TIFF, and HEIC files.

EXIF records dozens of fields including: camera make and model, lens model, focal length, shutter speed, aperture (f-number), ISO sensitivity, exposure compensation, white balance mode, GPS latitude/longitude/altitude, compass heading, timestamp, copyright, and software used. This data is used by photo management software (Lightroom, Apple Photos, Google Photos) for organization, map view, and metadata search.

Privacy concern: GPS data embedded in smartphone photos reveals exactly where a photo was taken. Sharing photos with EXIF intact discloses location information that may be sensitive. Social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) strip EXIF data before public display, but images shared via messaging apps, email, or direct download retain full EXIF.

How to View EXIF Data

EXIF can be viewed in: Windows Explorer (right-click > Properties > Details tab), macOS Preview (Tools > Show Inspector), iOS Photos (swipe up on a photo), Google Photos (tap the '⋮' menu > Details), or web tools like PicsSizer's Image Metadata Viewer. EXIF viewers show the structured fields; raw hex viewers can inspect the binary segment.

How to Remove EXIF Data

EXIF can be stripped using: PicsSizer's Bulk EXIF Stripper (browser-based, no upload), ImageMagick (command line: `convert -strip input.jpg output.jpg`), ExifTool (`exiftool -all= input.jpg`), or by saving a new copy through most image editors. Social media platforms remove EXIF automatically before public display.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does sharing a photo reveal my location?

If GPS EXIF data is present and the file is shared directly (via email, WhatsApp, direct download link), yes — the recipient can open the EXIF data and see the GPS coordinates. Major social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook) strip EXIF before public display. Messaging apps vary: WhatsApp strips metadata; Telegram by default does not for files sent as documents.

How do I remove GPS data from photos before sharing?

Use PicsSizer's Bulk EXIF Stripper to remove all EXIF metadata (including GPS) from images in your browser — no upload to any server. On iPhone, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Camera and set to 'Never' to stop recording GPS in new photos.

Does resizing or compressing an image remove EXIF?

It depends on the tool. Some tools (browser Canvas API, many online compressors) strip EXIF automatically. Others (ImageMagick without -strip, Photoshop Save As) preserve EXIF by default. PicsSizer's compressor strips EXIF by default for privacy; the Bulk EXIF Stripper explicitly removes all metadata.
